Burger Overload at Peter Luger

Before going to Peter Luger for a Steak Burger I would have said that I am strong enough to become a vegetarian and that I have the willpower to not eat meat. Now, I’ve gone to far. I can never be a vegetarian. Because I know how good a hamburger can be. The bacon cheeseburger from Peter Luger Steakhouse (which I asked for without cheese but came with cheese anyway) was the best damn burger I have ever eaten. And I will probably never eat it again.

We started out at the bar waiting for a table and polished off a few bloody marries complete with little delicious chunks of horseradish. We were seated after about an hour of waiting and ordered our STEAK BURGERS. Now, something you should know, steak burgers are the cheapest thing on the menu, weighing in at around 15 dollars with cheese and a quarter pound strip of bacon.

The first half went really well. By the time I started in on the second half I was sweating. The meat sweats are common and I’m not embarrassed about getting them. Incredible burger, I could have split it but it was worth being in pain for the next two days. Peter Luger, weekend brunch, try it.

Asya Reznikov is a young artist who has done some very creative stuff with video and photography. She currently has a show at the Nancy Hoffman gallery at 520 W. 27th Street in New York. Her art portrays stuff like an open box with a video projected into it of the box being packed. She does the same thing with a suitcase. Check it all out after the jump.

This is one of my favorites. You can see her hand holding the cardboard collage of the bridge. It’s kind of whimsical.

Blue Ribbon Brasserie, New York

Ate at Blue Ribbon Brassserie last night upon arriving in New York. We got there, gave our name to the host and killed half an hour walking around the block. We sat at 10:45. It was well worth the wait; everything was incredible. I didn’t bring a camera so I’m using some pics from other spots to get the point across. You’ll just have to go and see for yourselves.

We started with the classic Beef Marrow & Oxtail Marmalade and the Grilled Sardines. Both were delicious. The marrow was so flavorful and the marmalade was perfectly done, slightly sweet and tangy. The Sardines were served with an anchovy puree that was actually one of the most amazing things I’ve ever tasted. I felt a little awkward dipping the sardine in his friend’s puree but you do what you gotta do.

The Bar

Next we shared the Sauteed Calamari and the Fried Oysters. Both of these were perfectly prepared as well. The calamari was sauteed just the right amount and done with a delicious lemony sauce. The oysters were also perfect, served on top of some kind of pickled or sauteed collard greens (I think). Increible!

Finally we shared the special entree, a Braised Pork Shoulder. Wow. Definitely up there with the best braises I’ve ever tasted.

Prosecco Valdobbiadene: very reasonable, about 45 for a bottle. Espresso: also very good.

New York Philharmonic on the Great Lawn in Central Park

The New York Philharmonic plays on the Great Lawn in Central Park in July and its awesome. We brought big blankets and a picnic from Zabars (of course) and laid back and watch the fire flies and listened to classical music. You can bring wine too! If you’re in New York during the summer it would be foolish to miss this.

Hearst Corporation’s Green Headquarters

The Hearst Corporation’s headquarters it he greenest building in New York. To build it, they gutted their old building, reused most of the materials and built their new building up from inside it. It’s really very cool. We couldn’t go up passed the lobby but the entrance was pretty interesting to see. Two escalator move diagonally through waterfalls that flow at random rates throughout the day. Sometimes the water flow is loud and sometimes it is soft and tranquil. The guard at the front gave us the rundown on the building, telling us that the water was used to cool the building as well as give the entryway character. On the wall above the escalators and waterfalls is a giant finger painting made from mud found at the bottom of the Hudson River.

Bierkraft of Brooklyn: so much to try, so little time

I hung out in Brooklyn for a day with Sam and he took me to Bierkraft. I have never seen so many different kind of beers and ciders in my life. They also had these cool Growlers that you could buy, fill up and then return or refill once you drank all the beer.

We got delicious, huge, house-made roast beef sandwiches. Unfortunately they didn’t have a liquor license that allowed us to drink inside, so we did without the beer. This place is definitely worth a look, I give it 4/5 Onlies.

The Roof at the NY Metropolitan Museum of Art

This was a pretty cool piece of work: a system of metal tree-branch-like tubes winding and jutting around the roof of the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Delicious Artichoke Pizza

Artichoke Pizza is a great late-night spot to get cream of artichoke pizza, crab pizza or a whole baked artichoke. I went back twice and although I’m moderately lactose intolerant, it was definitely worth it.

I got the classic artichoke pizza both nights. It’s the best thing on the menu. If you have a chance, try to have a conversation with the proprietor of the joint as well. He’s a trip.

Arlene’s Grocery Live Karaoke

In honor of Bastille day, this crazy guy decided to sing “With a Little Help from my Friends” in his sweet green banana hammock. What a treat.

Eldridge Street Synagogue

This was pretty cool to see and it’s smack in the middle of China Town. An interesting place for a synagogue. Check the pictures and check out their website to visit. I’ve never really seen a synagogue like this before.
