A Weekend with St. Francis in Assisi

Assisi is the perfect day trip destination.  There is just about enough to see there in 24 hours.  I stayed overnight at a very nice (and warm, it snowed!) hotel called the Hotel Camere Carli.  The spot is right next to the Duomo di San Rufino, pretty ominous at night.

We arrived at night and went in search of an aperitivo.  We found one at a little dive bar about a 5 minute walk from out hotel.  Everything in Assisi is about 5 minutes away.  Next, we followed a Rick Steves recommendation for dinner at a place called La Lanterna.  It was hands down the worst meal I’ve had in Italy, maybe the worst ever.  Miles actually had to go and purge himself after dinner.  Terrible.  Depressing.

We woke up the next day really early and went directly to the Chiesa San Francesco.  We were the only people there so we looked around for a while and then went downstairs to the lower basilica to listen to the Franciscan monks sing mass.  Pretty.

We went to a few more churches and then decided to head back and stop in Perugia for lunch.  Little did we know, nothing in Perugia would be open between 2 and 6, so instead we just got GROM (only the best gelato in the world) and caught a grappa train back.  Yes, a grappa train.
